Profe Gutke has an MA in Spanish Pedagogy accompanied by a BA in Spanish Secondary Education; both degrees from Brigham Young University. He is originally from Southeastern, UT and some of his direct ancestors came from Mexico. His last name Gutke has origins in Sweden. As a child he grew up hiking canyons, playing sports and enjoying the beautiful area of San Juan County, Utah. As a freshman in high school he took Spanish Level I and was very excited about it until he started comparing himself to his classmates and thinking he wasn't getting it and they were. He, like other students, decided that it was not possible to learn another language and quit taking it after two years even though he loved the idea of speaking another language. As he got older he realized that what Henry Ford said, "whether you think you can or think that you can't; you're right" was not only crucial to understand in regards to learning a foreign language, but also to anything in life. Profe Gutke truly believes that every student can learn Spanish; for some it comes more naturally than others, but it is possible for all. Because of his first exposure to academic Spanish, he never thought in his wildest dreams that he would be teaching Spanish many years later at Timpview High School in Provo, UT. He has since learned that where there is a will, there is a way. He currently loves to learn more each day about Spanish and to see progress in his students and knows that they can be very successful when they truly understand their potential. Since that first exposure to Spanish, he has since lived abroad in Bolivia, South America and traveled extensively throughout Spain. He has also taught eight Spanish at BYU and for a government program as well as at the Missionary Training Center. He has also taught Spanish in the public school system at Richmond, VA. In other professional capacities he has worked with ESL students as well as ran a program for four years working with at-risk youth. He loves to use Spanish on a daily basis at work and within his community and feels he has become a better person because it has been a part of his life..
