STARWARS LA FUERZA DESPIERTA en español
PG-13
BELLA
Eduardo Verastegui
<<Six years ago, I realized that Latinos, since the 1940’s until today we have been stereotyped in a very negative way in the media. You know, always a drunkard, the criminal, and the bandido. If you are good looking, then you are the Don Juan, the Casanova Latin lover. In other words, the womanizer. Very few times do you see Latinos having the opportunity of being and playing heroes. I’m not talking about heroes like Superman or Spiderman, I’m talking about the everyday hero, the real hero,” says Verástegui. “That’s when I had this conviction and this desire in my heart to open a production company, and to produce films that will have the potential not only to entertain, but to make a difference. Films that would elevate the dignity of Latinos in this country and in the whole world. Films that will light a candle in the hearts of the audience, films that will show the real face of Latinos,>> he says.
“‘Bella’ is a film that changed my life, and ‘Bella’ is a love story that goes beyond romance. It’s about a man who had everything in his life. He had money, success, and fame and he lost that all. But in losing it all, he found everything that matters in life, which is true love and true friendship and a lot of beautiful things that you will discover while you’re watching the film. This film shows you that there is a time in everyone’s life, when a moment will change your life forever and life will never be the same again and if it hasn’t happened to you, it will, whether you like or not,” Verástegui. This time, he says his success feels right.

ROBERTO CLEMENTE
This DVD contains a wonderful recounting of the life of one of baseball's true greats, and it isn't only for baseball fans. Roberto Clemente was the first great Latin American baseball star in the US. Clemente's life is recounted from his very humble beginnings in Puerto Rico (his father worked in the sugar cane fields) to his stardom with the Pittsburgh Pirates to his tragic death. The story is told in such a way as to really bring Clemente to life. There are interviews with many who knew him, including his wife Vera, his teammate Manny Sanguillen, as well as Orlando Cepeda and David Maraniss (who wrote a terrific biography of Clemente a few years ago which I've reviewed previously). They show some clips from some interviews he gave with reporters, and you'll get a sense of how surly he could be. Of course his achievements in baseball figure prominently in this tale. The 300 hits, the 2 World Series, his being robbed of the MVP. Beyond the purely baseball aspect though, you'll learn how Clemente was a many of dignity, with a tremendous amount of pride and respect for his family and for his fellow Puerto Ricans, and a man who ultimately died trying to help others. He is what we would hope all our sports heros would be like. This DVD is a great homage to a great baseball player, highly recommended.

In a part of America that rarely makes headlines, there is a small town with a group of teenagers who will captivate your ears and warm your heart.
Mariachi High presents a year in the life of the champion mariachi ensemble at Zapata High School on the Rio Grande in South Texas. As they compete and perform with musical virtuosity, these teens and the music they make will inspire, surprise, and bring you to your feet. High school never sounded so good. PG-13. Chronicling the birth of a modern American movement, Cesar Chavez tells the story of the famed civil rights leader and labor organizer torn between his duties as a husband and father and his commitment to securing a living wage for farm workers. Passionate but soft-spoken, Chavez embraced non-violence as he battled greed and prejudice in his struggle to bring dignity to people. Chavez inspired millions of Americans from all walks of life who never worked on a farm to fight for social justice. His triumphant journey is a remarkable testament to the power of one individual's ability to change the world.Written by Pantelion Films
In the Mexican town of San Angel, Manolo (Diego Luna), Maria (Zoë Saldana) and Joaquin (Channing Tatum) have been friends ever since childhood. Although their lives have taken different paths -- Maria was sent to Europe, Joaquin joined the military, and Manolo studied to become a bullfighter -- one thing remains the same: Manolo and Joaquin both want to marry Maria. Little does the trio know that battling husband-and-wife deities have made a high-stakes wager on the love triangle's outcome.

It is the story of a young girl in the 1960s whose family has a farm, and her father hires migrant workers from Mexico. The migrant workers face prejudice from the locals. The girl, Ira, befriends a young Mexican boy and has to decide whether to listen to the townspeople and reject him, or follow her heart and stay friends with him. It is a really well-done and beautiful film, and it is great for the whole family!
